The Fund for Restoration of the Old Academy Building Established
January 19, Kyiv-Mohyla Academy held the First Fundraising Event of the Restoration Project. The Project is aimed to raise funds for restoration of 11 old buildings composing a unique architectural complex on the premises of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
The first stage of the Restoration charity project includes reconstruction of the Old Academy (Mazepa) building (1704). The total sum necessary for the reconstruction amounts to 35 million UAH. Providing availability of funds, the Restoration of the Old Academy (Mazepa’s) building can be accomplished in three years, before the 400th anniversary of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, the oldest Ukrainian university.
According to preliminary calculations, preparing of project and budget documentation will cost 600 thousand UAH.
79 donators have already made their contributions. During the First Fundraising Event, 559 640 UAH were raised.
All the participants of the Event, paying for their tickets and buying artistic works at the Silent Auction, have already put their bricks into realization of this ambitious project. The first contributions were made by Dragon Capital, Raiffeisen Bank Aval, BDO in Ukraine, and Kyiv Mohyla Foundation of America, Ukrainian Publishing House in Chicago and private persons from Ukraine and USA also contributed to the project.
Kyiv-Mohyla Academy applies to all adherents for financial support of this ambitious project to preserve a significant for Ukrainian history building. We hope that the Restoration Project will become nation-wide, and the retrieving of our spiritual and intellectual sanctuary will be a private matter for everybody.

Representatives of the Administration of the President of Ukraine, of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, of diplomatic body accredited in Ukraine, businessmen and artists visited the event January 19, 2011. The Restoration Project got international support: Ambassadors Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada and France to Ukraine joined the Restoration Project Board of Trustees. Their Excellencies, as well as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Austria to Ukraine Wolf Dietrich Heim and representatives of 4 countries and European Union, were present at the Event. 16 Embassies of foreign states to Ukraine and of the European Union Mission presented prizes for the lottery.
Oleh Skrypka’s songs and a concert by New Era Orchestra, hold under support of KM Core and VAVILON Company, created an exquisite emotional atmosphere of the Evening.
An important part of the evening was the Silent Auction of contemporary art; gallerist Pavlo Gudimov was its curator and gathered for it works of three generations of artists. The auction results confirmed donators’ interest in works of well known (Serhiy Yakutovych, Oleksandr Babak, Pavlo Makov, Ihor Yanovych and others) and young (Olga Lanko, Volodymyr Stetskovych, Albina Yaloza) artists.
In addition to financial support of the Restoration Project, at the Charity Event a contribution to the Olena Zamostian Arts Gallery of NaUKMA was made. Viktor Baloha bought and presented to the Academy a work by Oleksandr Lyapin “Hole #63, Kyiv, Kontractova Square”. This work of a famous photographer is especially important for Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, being an artist’s vision of a significant for NaUKMA members place – the square near Hryhoriy Skovoroda’s Monument. One more of the sold at the auction works of the painter Anton Logov was presented to our Academy by Yurij Boyarchuk. Lots-surprises from the members of the Restoration Project Trustees Board Lilia Pustovit and Ivan Malkovych were sold successfully. Lilia Pustovit designed, for the project Poustovit for Kyiv Mohyla Academy specially, a shawl Cherish the Legacy.
Ivan Malkovych afforded for the auction two reproductions of favourite illustrations for Andersen’s fairy-tale “Snow Queen” by Vladyslav Yerko, and, during the auction, decided to present three pictures more.
